Here are some more advanced techniques for list building. If you have not yet read the article on basics of email marketing and list building I suggest you read that article first. Basics of Email Marketing.

List Building Technique – 1
One of the most common techniques used by internet marketers today is to give away freebies in the form of ebooks, reports or access to free videos in return for email address. This technique of list building works very well as people love getting freebies.

Create as many free ebooks and reports as you can. Make sure you write the ebooks / reports in such a way which goes viral by giving people an incentive to share the report with others. Add an offer at the end of the report and link to your squeeze page in case people want to subscribe if they like your content.

Also use some paid classified ads like olx.com, ebay.com or USFreeAds.com to give momentum to your free ebooks and reports.

List Building Technique – 2
To get a lot of subscribers viral marketing is the probably the best way to go. By providing your subscribers those things which they can share with others to get personal benefit, you are encouraging them to spread the word quickly. Give your subscribers PLR so they can put their name and give them to others.

If your content is good it will go viral easily and quickly. If you don’t want your stuff to be treated as crap then don’t put too many affiliate links or URL’s in your report.

If you feel you are not good at writing then get someone to write for you. You can easily get someone to write a 10 pages e-book for anywhere between $30 – $50.

Please note writing free reports should be taken very seriously and your goal should be get subscribers with quality content and not to make money with the report.

You can also do interviews with established internet marketers and provide these free of charge to others to get subscribers.

List Building Technique – 3
It is a good idea to put more than one opt-in box on your site. More than one opt-in box does magic! If you put opt-in box on almost every page of your site you are increasing the chances to get more subscribers.

If you have a small website then put an opt-in box at the beginning and end of the page. You can also use different colors to make your opt-in box more visible and stand out.

If you have good content on your site then there should be no problem in getting subscribers.

The main idea is to get subscribers by:

Having good content
Using different colors for your opt-in box to be more visible
Using more than one opt-in boxes on your site.

List Building Technique – 4
Use exit pop up windows to get people to subscribe when they leave your site. If used properly exit pop up windows can be very effective.

The pop up windows which appear when someone is leaving your site are also known as exit pop up windows. When your site visitor clicks to leave your site they will be asked to subscribe to your website.

People who have not subscribed to your site will subscribe at this stage and increase the numbers on your list.

Make sure to get good pop up windows that keep records of IP addresses of visitors and don’t show up again when the same visitor come back to your site. There are a lot of pop windows that you can get free however if you are serious about your business then I would suggest explore the paid options.

List Building Technique – 5
Better than free ebooks and reports are free courses. People want to learn and use the internet to search for information.

If you give people free e-book or report they may unsubscribe after getting the free report, however if you offer them a free course delivered daily for a period of time, then usually they will stick around until the course is completed and get to know you for providing quality content.

For delivering the content there are a lot of autoresponder services you can use, e.g. Aweber, GetResponse, Constant Contact etc

For your free courses don’t copy and paste someone else’s work as people visit lots of sites and if they see that you have just copied the articles from another website, then you will lose your credibility.

List Building Technique – 6
Another good technique is to join as many forums as you can related to your niche. By offering good advice and contributing to the forum you will win the trust of other people and gain a good reputation.

Once you have built up your name and you are seen as an expert then you can ask others to join your newsletter to learn more about the subject.

You can add information about your newsletter in your signature and keep posting on the forum. People who read your posts will try to subscribe to your newsletter.

Use these simple steps to build your list.

Find forums in your niche
Read the rules of the forums
Start posting informative posts and include your little newsletter byline in your signature.

Finding forums is easy however make sure you post good content only and don’t spam forums otherwise you will be thrown out.

List Building Technique – 7
List swapping is a great idea. You ask your subscribers to subscribe to another internet marketers list and the other internet marketer is asking its subscribers to subscribe to your list. This is a win-win situation!

This can also be a bit risky as you don’t know the nature, expectations and the past of the other marketers subscribers or which kind of products were sent to them lately. You may have to manage both lists in totally different ways. You may have to create different kind of products for both the lists.

For list building I know some people buy email lists. In my opinion this is the worst idea ever. DON’T do it! It’s just a waste of time, money and effort. A lot scams are being operated in the buying and selling of email lists.

Never buy bulk email lists and don’t send emails about things you know nothing about.

For list building in my opinion the best way to get subscribers is just getting your OWN subscribers.
